Succession Planting at Great Dixter and Full Bloom at Hunting Brook Gardens with Luke Senior from Great Dixter & Jimi Blake
Wednesday 6th August 2025
10.30am – 4pm
Join Jimi Blake and Luke Senior for an exclusive class in the Gardens at Hunting Brook when the gardens are in full bloom and closed to the public
Luke will give an illustrated lecture ‘Sussessional Plating At Great Dixter’
Succession planting is an exciting way to combine plants in the same patch of ground- almost a lasagne type arrangement resulting in longer and often multi-seasonal displays. This extended season is achieved by one plant taking over from another in an ebbing and flowing effect hence the term succession planting.
Over the course of the day, Jimi and Luke will discuss the design of the main borders in the sunny parts of the garden. This is a wonderful opportunity to examine how he creates borders in his unique style using a tapestry of plants to wonderful effect. Understanding light, colour, form and texture, repetition, balance and linking areas of the garden together. Jimi will talk in-depth about the pallet of plants he uses to create harmony and flow and also the dramatic combinations that give Hunting Brook its exuberance at this time of year
The afternoon will be packed with information about growing techniques and the practicalities of maintaining borders from spring through to winter. Including propagation, plant selection, deadheading, feeding and extending the seasons
How to use Dahlias, Salvias and annuals to create colour for summer colour
He will give you an insight into how to group colours and plants for dynamic seasonal effects and you will be guaranteed to go home with lots of new ideas to implement in your own garden or a client’s garden.
Luke Senior is a graduate of horticulture and land management at WIT. He was fortunate to work at Lismore Castle gardens during that time as a seasonal worker with the gardening team and also at Hunting Brook on and off over the years. In 2022 he won a year's scholarship to train at Great Dixter in East Sussex where he has remained as a member of the permanent gardening staff.

Please bring some lunch with you.
